Just kidding!
Finding Time
One of the hardest things to learn is time management. Each person has to figure out their own. But it has to be done or you end up going in circles, getting nothing done.
You will need to schedule time for:
Your family, very important that they do not feel replaced!
Learning your new job. And that takes days, weeks and months... I never stop learning! Don't stress out. The longer you are learning the better you are becoming.
Actually working at your new endeavor. Many new consultants think they will join a company and checks just show up in the mail. :-) This is like any other job. You have to work. The cool part? You are working for YOU and YOUR family's benefits. Awesome!
Last but never least... make time for yourself. You need an off switch and know how to use it. No one should think about 'the biz' all the time. That causes burn out really quick! It also can make others uncomfortable if that is all you can talk about. We do not want overkill!
Make a file for your company.
If it is my XYZ Company I name the file XYZ. I know you think I am silly to point this out but you are in panic mode, right? With one file for your company you can save everything together.
What goes inside of the magic file of knowledge can get pretty packed. Be careful to create sub files (more about this later). I start out with a sub file called Images. (I have so many graphics they are coming out of my ears!) Finding a document in a bunch of graphics slows me down as I start looking at the pretty pictures and have to stop to remember what I was looking for in the first place.
Notes
Figure out how you want to take/make/ NOTES. You cannot remember everything even though it seems everyone else thinks you should! You have a lot to absorb and time is ticking away.
I personally thought I could remember everything! "I will remember that answer." "I will remember where I found that information." I am super consultant! I learned really quick. I don't remember things like I used to and you know? Sometimes age has nothing to do with it!
I use my computer's "Notepad" the most. Normally I am just trying to remember little snippets. I learned to have a Notepad shortcut on my desk top. I have now graduated to putting it down in the tool bar at the bottom so I can just click it open, paste, name and file! Just use what you are comfortable with as you will use it a lot. I do use Word if I am saving a long list.
Need homework?
Stop right now and create a file. Create a note that has your web address and your login information. Some companies just have one or two but I have been with companies that have you signing into 3 or more. It quickly gets very confusing and sooner or later you will need this.
Examples:
My website URL: http://djksdjfksjdf.com
My user name: me!
My password: this that and the other
My back office URL:
User name for this:
Password for this:
My Training Site.... etc. You get the picture! I usually name this note "info" but you know? It is your note :-)
